Haiku My Heart

Baseball is a game
It's balls, bats, gloves and practice
It's a boy's passion.

It's not just winning
It's the batting and catching
It's learning the skills

Baseball is a game
It's balls, bats, gloves and practice
It's a boy's PASSION

This Haiku is a tribute to all who love baseball.  It's also a tribute to a  young man and his team who advanced to the semi-finals of the Regionals of the Little League World Series.   They didn't win.  No, but they did show amazing talent.  I know the hours they have practiced and the determination with which they have played the game.  I was even able to watch them play for the first time on national television and was amazed at the poise and maturity they showed.

Again I applaud the Golfmoor boys, coaches and especially Luke for making my day!!!  You were terrific!!!

A man practices the art of adventure when he breaks the chain of routine and renews his life through reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies and adopting new viewpoints” ~Wilfred Peterson

A League of Their Own

Bosse Field, is a baseball stadium located in Evansville, Indiana. Built in 1915, it is the third oldest ballpark used for professional baseball on a regular basis in the country, surpassed only by Fenway Park (1912) in Boston and Wrigley Field (1914) in Chicago.  (Wikipedia)

It's a grand adventure when you can travel to the local ball park and watch a baseball game with family.  It's grander yet when we all could sit in the same stand and watch this game where it was played nearly 100 years ago.  I have only a few memories of the this park and all are fond.

It's most recent claim to fame was the field used in the movie, A League of Their Own.  Bosse  Field is a hometown treasure.

My first was when we took the kid to an Evansville Triplets ball game in 1983.  At that time they were the farm club for the Detroit Tigers.  They became the Otters in 1995 and in 1997 our son, Wes, was the trainer for the team two years.

Last night though it was just a "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" night.  Great fun including catching that elusive ball in the stand!!!  Way to go, Dave!!!  Caught bare-handed!  Singing, clapping, cheering, and just plain having a ball!  Last night was a treasured memory.

No family reunion is complete without a baseball game. We were lucky to be in a city for our reunion where baseball is the name of the game. These pictures were taken by Ron. I personally enjoy the pictures of the St. Louis skyline. The pictures are all pre-game. That's because on an adventure like this one, if you are to enjoy it, you watch the game, cheer, have a beer, and heckle...ya don't take pictures. So what you see is what you get. You get the referees, the grounds crew (they don't get enough praise!), Fredbird, and a few celebs...OH! St. Louis was playing the Oakland A's and St. Louis won 11-3.

It's apparent that a good time was had by all!!!

Nostalgia

You know, there is nothing like those childhood memories. On the Nightly New with Jim Lehrer last noc there was a segment on the Colorado Rockies and the World Series. Well, homesickness set in almost immediately!!!

Before there were the Broncos, Nuggets, or the Rockies, there was the Denver Bears! Yep! at one time or another they were the "farm club" for the Yankees (ONE of the reasons my dad was such a fan of the team--many others exist higher on the list) and the Cubs, as I remember. I remember the 4th of July and going as a family to the ball game and watching the fireworks at "Bears Stadium". It wasn't a tradition or anything like that, but when we went it seemed it was always on the 4th. I guess that is why I have enjoyed going to Otters baseball games here on the 4th because it is intimate and just plane fun.

Though I'm not sure how well they will do, I'm certainly proud they will be in The Series. So GO Rockies!!!

And for the memories I say, "Thanks be to God!"
