Sunday Walk By the River

After Mass this morning Ron and I decided to a walk to the river.  Here in Newburgh is a lock and dam where the barges move up and down the river carrying coal, grain and oil.

This morning we hit the jackpot.  There were barges coming and going.

Farther along on our walk we encountered some very lovely blossoms.

We met this handsome Gentleman along the way, watching to make sure he safely crossed the road.

No walk is complete on a Sunday morning with out a stop at Ben and Pennys.  And this morning was no different.  Ron had a warm carmel apple cookie and I had maple walnut scone, both topped with a
small scoop of vanilla ice cream

Then these flower pots reminded me that this is the last weekend in August and the door is now opening onto the an autumn porch. It has been a summer of saddness and joy for us but all in all God has been gracious.

Still Spring

It's still Spring. . .

Spring

Spring is life
Spring is hope
So is love and
happiness.
Spring renews.
Without spring,
life is forlorn.
Spring is nostalgia
after bitter storm.
Put spring in your heart

Bird Nest Anthology, 2013

This was a journey. I discovered this bird nest last Fall. It was in a tree outside one of the windows where I work.  I so enjoyed watching the changes as they took place.  I could hardly wait until Spring when I just knew Mama would arrive to set up housekeeping.  Much to my chagrin Mother Nature takes care of her own and so I discovered that She decorated and camouflaged the wee nest so that I could not photograph Mama and her brood.  I've seen her nesting, but only in the shadows.  It's been quite an adventure!

It's true Spring is for the Birds!!!!

all her lovely companions are faded and gone."

Mosaic/Macro Monday~~Air Plant

I was introduced to Air Plants by a dear friend and coworker a couple of months ago.  The one she gave to me then is cute and small and I have named him Simon.  She went to visit family in Tennessee a week ago and I asked her to bring me two more when she went to Gatlinburg.  This is one of the two she brought to me.  Isn't she lovely.  Sarah told me that this variety of of air plant may only bloom once every ten years.  But she also said it might also keep its bloom for up to a year.  Well, here's hoping for I think Miriam is just beautiful!

Tillandsia is a genus of around 540 species in the Bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae), found in the forests, mountains, and deserts, of Central and South America, and Mexico and the southern United States in North America. Tillandsia recurvata and another Bromeliaceae species on electric wires near San Juan de los Morros, Venezuela Flowering Tillandsia and daughter plant The thinner-leafed varieties grow in rainy areas and the thick-leafed varieties in areas more subject to drought. Moisture and nutrients are gathered from the air (dust, decaying leaves and insect matter) through structures on the leaves called trichomes. Tillandsia species are epiphytes (also called aerophytes or air plants) – i.e. they normally grow without soil while attached to other plants. Epiphytes are not parasitic, depending on the host only for support. The genus Tillandsia was named by Carolus Linnaeus after the Swedish physician and botanist Dr. Elias Tillandz (originally Tillander) (1640-1693).

I would maintain that thanks are the highest forms of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. ~G. K. Chesterton

Though it is hard to make him out there is indeed a little critter on my marigold!!! He's a nice contrast.

I have had one of the grandest two weekends ever!!!  Last weekend we spent time in NC with the Keller Clan there and enjoyed a beautiful Thanksgiving Holiday.  This weekend we were with the Keller Clan of GA.  Yesterday was Xavier's Baptism and the glory of God shown all round!

When we were at The Woods two weeks ago we were able to see the progress that has been made in reconstructing The Cabin on the site of the original cabin where Saint Mother Theodore and her companions first attended Mass after their arrival there.  This was also the home of Father Buteux.  It must have been a very intimate celebration!  It is being constructed with the same tools that would have been used to construct constructed it nearly 175 years ago.

Bittersweet October.  The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter.  ~Carol Bishop Hipps

These two quotes have touched me today.  Especially as the month of October wanes.  For my garden is not going to pass easily into winter this year.  Even though it has been left to its own resources, without the weeding and pruning, it continues to thrive in all its beauty.   It's true for me that fall is indeed, that "perfect pause between" summer and winter.

The Westside Nut Club Fall Festival was this last week and we had a grand time.  The Kellers and Stauffers from INDY were down and we each had our moments at the Festival.  There is so much food and such a variety that you just don't know where to begin.  There's the chicken and dumplings, brain sandwich,  fried cookie dough,  Hay Stacks, chili and steak sandwiches.  And don't forget the rides.

This weekend was one of those Indiana weekends you just want to put into a bottle and save for a time in January or February when you want to go outside and revel in the glory of the sun and bask in its rays.  Glory be to God!

Pictures here were taken in Sheridan, Wyoming this summer.  It was one of those unplanned stops along the way.  It was well worth the detour!  A stop by the Sheridan Inn, that hopes to open it's doors again as a hotel and not just a museum, and the Buffalo Bill Bar was a treat!

I really appreciate how life must have been before all the medical
advances with which we have been blessed.  I can only imagine
how difficult it would have been to treat illnesses without all the
medications we have today!  We really are blessed!!!

~~Mosaic and Macro Monday~~

Went in to water my Peace Lily last week and found she had three visitors.  Now I have been accused of not watering my plants enough, but this is a first.  I guess if you water them too much mushrooms will grow?  At any rate I have not idea what kind they are but you know they did add contrast to the pot and some surprises!
